This is why the FMV Mega CD games don’t have full-screen video. The Mega Drive VDP has limited tile upload bandwidth, so you can’t upload an entire screen worth of tiles every frame, and you have additional palette limitations. It’s fast enough to upload a complete planar screen bitmap every frame, allowing a cartridge to effectively provide full-screen FMV capability. One reason the SNES was better-suited to putting things like SuperFX in the cartridge was that it had far better DMA capability. There’s also the Codemasters J-Cart with extra controller ports You could argue the Mega CD and 32X are Mega Drive enhancement chips, as they add sprite scaling/rotation, and SH2 CPUs with a frame buffer overlay and accelerated fill operations, respectively. It had very capable sprite hardware, including sprite transparency effects, along with a ROZ layer (mode 7). The SNES has plenty of games without enhancement chips. The SNES was way more popular and the Mega Drive vs SNES battle was strong though IIRC the Mega Drive was more popular in the UK (not surprising as it had better games and was black). So it wasn't a complete failure but it is uncommon. *It wasn't a total failure and people still had them but I know 2 people had an NES and i've long since lost contact with one of them, I know many people who had a Spectrum, it's just how it is, the NES sold 10m units across Europe while the microcomputers sold at least double that. Budget games were £2-£5 on the micros of the day and so used prices of a NES are pretty high.
NES SNES EMULATOR FULL
Here in the UK the NES was basically a flop*, the cartridges cost 4-5x the cost of a full priced game for a microcomputer, the console was just as much as a microcomputer and it only played games, it couldn't run BASIC and so type in games were also out. Well yeah, if you have a SNES but can't justify the price of a NES you can emulate the games on the SNES.
